Build an everyday meal

Put familiar foods together without turning dinner into a calculation.

Use food groups as a starting point

A varied diet includes vegetables and fruit, starchy carbohydrates, protein foods, and dairy or suitable alternatives. The Eatwell Guide describes balance over the day or week; you do not need every individual meal to match a diagram exactly.

Build from what you already eat

Take a familiar meal and ask what would make it more rounded. Pasta can become a meal with beans or fish and vegetables. A jacket potato can work with a filling you enjoy and a side of vegetables. Culture, budget, allergies and access all belong in the decision.

  • Choose a familiar base.
  • Add a protein food you like.
  • Include fruit or vegetables and adjust the amount to your appetite and needs.

A common mistake

Replacing all your usual meals with unfamiliar “perfect” recipes at once.

Try this next

Choose one meal you already make and add one useful ingredient to the shopping list.
