Make room for sleep

Look at the opportunity to sleep before adding another bedtime trick.

Start with the edges of the night

Notice when you need to wake and what regularly delays bed. Work, care duties and shift patterns may limit your options. Pick the part you can influence, such as finishing an optional task earlier or preparing tomorrow’s essentials before the evening gets late.

Try a repeatable wind-down

Choose a quiet activity that helps you step away from the day, and make the sleeping space comfortable, dark and quiet where possible. Keep the plan flexible enough that it does not become another performance target.

  • Choose a realistic time to begin winding down.
  • Move one stimulating or demanding task earlier if you can.
  • Notice the overall pattern across several nights.

A common mistake

Making the routine longer while leaving too little time for sleep itself.

Try this next

Identify one evening task you could finish earlier or leave until tomorrow.

Evidence & sources

NHS advice supports regular sleep routines and a suitable environment. Sleep hygiene is not a cure for every sleep disorder. Persistent sleep problems or significant daytime impairment deserve clinical advice.
